| Blue Plaques - Rhondda Cynon Taf |
|
And to celebrate this, the Council’s Libraries & Museums Service has developed a Blue Plaque Heritage Trail illustrating the famous people, events and landmarks of the County Borough. Thanks to £49,200 of Heritage Lottery funding, the project has set out to identify icons, events and buildings, culminating in the placing of blue plaques to commemorate their history and achievements. Following consultation with community representatives and historical societies, a total of 30 Blue Plaques have been installed in the project at those locations not already recognised with previous plaques or memorials. Nominations for the new scheme were sought from communities throughout the County Borough and the Project Steering Group had the unenviable task of deciding which areas would receive the first phase of Blue Plaques. With so many historical buildings and events from colliery strikes, riots and even pioneering cremations in the area’s history, coupled with being the birthplace of a vast array of celebrities from the worlds of music, sport, cinema, literature and the political arena, the decisions were taken after lengthy consultation with various community groups and historic societies.
